After you have accepted Jesus to become the Lord of your life, the most important thing you can do is develop a Bible reading plan. I have often been asked, “Which is more important — praying or reading my Bible?” The Bible is the most important. Without reading the Bible, you do not even know how to pray.

The Bible is God’s Word to us for our lives.

There are basically two kinds of guidance we get from the Bible. There is general guidance and specific guidance.

General guidance helps us live our lives on a daily basis. We need this continuously!

But, there are times when we need specific guidance. Which job do I take? Where do I live? Who do I marry? These, along with many other questions, must be dealt with using specific guidance.

If you do not learn to hear the voice of God for general guidance, you will never know His voice for specific guidance. The abundant Christian life comes from your ability to receive God’s guidance day after day.

The Word of God was given so we can know how to live, but there is an even more important reason. The Word of God was given so that we might know Jesus. The goal of life is not knowledge or understanding. The goal of life is to know Jesus more. The Bible is one of the ways we can come to know Jesus.

For years I have studied the Bible with great intensity–doing whatever I could to understand more. But after close examination, I realized that I wasn’t reading the Bible to know Jesus. I was reading it to know information. My motives were wrong. So I challenged my own way of thinking and sat aside a few extra minutes a day to read the Bible for pleasure. My goal for those extra moments was to know Jesus more, to learn about His character, and to discover what He was speaking to me through the passages. It completely revolutionized the way I studied God’s Word, by making it fresh, personal and exciting.

Let me encourage you to set aside a specific time three or four days a week. Each day at that time, take out your Bible and spend a few minutes reading a chapter or two. Before you actually begin reading, say this simple prayer — Jesus, right now I am going to give this time to You. Help me as I read to have a better understanding of who You are and become a better person for giving this time to You. Amen.

The Bible tells us in Romans 12:2, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” The bottom-line is that every day we are influenced by what is going on around us. There are companies such as Coca-Cola or Nike that spend millions of dollars every year to advertise because they have realized that people are influenced by their surroundings. What you put in is what will come out. If you put the Bible in you (by reading it), you will soon discover it will come out of you (by saying it).

Next Step #2 – Learn to Pray

Prayer is a vital aspect of the Christian life.

When we read our Bibles, God is speaking to us. In prayer, we are speaking to God. Have you ever seen a train fire up and try to move forward when it was not on tracks? It is impossible. Prayer is like setting the train on its tracks. Without it, we can go nowhere. With it, we can go everywhere.

One of the great things about prayer is that prayer can do anything God can do. Prayer is the most powerful force we have because it touches the most powerful person in the world. In 1 John 5:15 it says, “And if we know that He hears us – whatever we ask – we know we have what we asked of Him.”

Learn how to pray effectively.

A few pointers for prayer are:

1. Pray in the name of Jesus – The name of Jesus gives you the authority to come before God and bring your requests.

2. Pray in faith – Believe that you are going to receive what you have been praying for. Mark 11:24 says, “Therefore I tell you, whatever things you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

3. Pray continuously – Do not give up. The only way you will know how to pray effectively is by spending time in prayer. It’s kind of like working out at the gym. When you first start off, some of the dumb bells are nearly impossible to lift. The more you work out, the more you are able to lift. Prayer works the same way. When you first start out, it will be challenging and you will not think you are saying the right things. Do not worry about it. Prayer is simply you talking to God about anything you want to talk with Him about. The more you pray, the easier it will seem to speak the right words.

Learning how to pray will change the context of your life. So many times people start their prayer journey and think that after a couple of weeks their prayers should be moving mountains.  The truth of it is, that this is just not normal.  Does it happen?  Yes, there are exceptions to every prayer lifestyle.  For the most part, it takes time.  It takes commitment.

I was reading a book called “The 15 Invaluable Laws of Leadership” by John C. Maxwell, and one of his well-established and thought-out laws was, the “Law of Consistency,” which is staying with it, little by little, every day.  Maxwell has written over twenty books and many on the New York Times’ best-sellers’ list.  When asked how he’d written so many books, his answer was simple.  “I write a little bit every day.  I write at least twenty-five minutes per day.  I stay consistent.  That doesn’t mean I only write a couple days a week.  That means I write twenty-five minutes a day, every day!”

If you want to see God move in your family and in your life, it is going to take consistency in prayer.

John Wesley wisely quoted that “God does nothing but by prayer, and everything with it.”  When you want to see God move in your life, a lifestyle of prayer is a must.

Think of hinges on a door.  I was once traveling and saw doors that were literally over twenty feet high.  These doors weighed hundreds of pounds.  They were extremely heavy, but with one hand I could push them open.  In order for those doors to function this way, there was a secret.  There was something that was operating even though I was not looking at it or thinking about it.  They were the small hinges on the inside of the door.  These ten hinges that held this door secure, made it so I could push it open with one hand.  They allowed the door to operate the way it was created to operate.

This is exactly what prayer is in your life. Your everyday life and the decisions you make are an illustration of the heavy door.  Prayer is the illustration of the hinges.  If you were to take away the hinges on the door, it would be sealed shut and too heavy to move.  If you take prayer out of your life, every decision that you make and everything that comes your way will be nearly impossible to function the way that God created it to function.

“God does nothing but by prayer, and everything with it.” -John Wesley

There have been times in my own prayer journey that I throughly enjoyed praying.  I would pray and run out of time before I ran out of a desire to pray.  Then there have been times that I would pray and think I had been praying for hours.  I’d look at the clock and see that it had only been a matter of minutes.  The difference between my prayer life now and they way it was many years ago when I did not see the need for prayer, is that during those tough times, I would persevere through.  I forced myself to stay in my room and pray.

No matter where you are at today, let me encourage you to set aside time every day to pray and seek God for direction in your life.

If you want to know more about prayer you can go to Amazon or iBookstore and purchase a book called, Prayer: Developing A Lifestyle of Prayer. I wrote this book to teach the importance of establishing a daily prayer life.

Next Step #4 – Get Baptized

One of the first steps for a new Believer is baptism at the first possible occasion.

In the days when Jesus lived, people did not have churches where invitations were given at the end of the service. When a person received Christ, they were baptized immediately, in a nearby river, lake or sea. This was their way of publicly demonstrating their faith in Christ and that they were also making a commitment to follow Him.

After you are born again, you should be baptized to testify to the world that you are a Believer in Jesus Christ. In Matthew 10:32-33, Jesus said, “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father is heaven.” It is important to realize that the word of God was not given to be viewed as a suggestion. It was given to be obeyed.

There are many different ways people are baptized. Some are sprinkled as a baby, others have water poured on them, while some are immersed. The Bible gives many examples of people getting baptized and they were never sprinkled or had water poured over their heads. Instead, they were fully immersed. Immersion is a vital aspect of baptism.

Baptism is a picture of the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. For example, it is a picture of the death when the person is laid into the water. Then it’s a picture of the burial when the person is totally immersed in the water and a picture of the resurrection when the person is raised out of the water.

It would be accurate to say that baptism is an outward expression of an inward decision. In other words, baptism has no power to save you. Baptism shows others that you have received Jesus Christ into your life. Baptism is not essential for salvation, but it is essential to be obedient. If a person isn’t obedient in being baptized, then they probably will not be obedient in other areas, such as reading the Bible or praying.

If you have truly given your life to Christ, you should fulfill what Jesus has asked and get baptized.

Bible passages about baptism:

Matthew 3:11, “I baptize you with water for repentance.”

Luke 3:21-22, “Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son, with you I am well pleased.”

Acts 2:38, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Galatians 3:27, “For as many of you who were baptized into Christ are now saved.”

Matthew 28:19, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
Next Step #3 – Get Involved in a Growing Church

As a new believer or even someone that has recommitted their life to Christ, it is extremely important that you get involved in a healthy, growing church. The best place to learn about God and grow in your faith is around other people who are desiring to do the same.

The Bible teaches a principle that I have lived by for many years now–you become like those you are around. I remember a time when I first began college at Oklahoma State University. My dad sat me down and asked me, “Taylor, what do you want to do with your life?” I told him, “I had always felt a strong sense of being in full time ministry and I believe that is what I want to do.” He then asked, “What are you doing to prepare yourself for that?” That next semester I transferred to Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma where I finished up my schooling in Pastoral Christian Ministries. You see, my dad was teaching me that what I felt in my heart God calling me to do was important and I needed to get around others with similar callings.

We take cues from our peers. If every one of your friends were out doing things you knew were wrong, eventually you would probably end up doing the same. Adversely, we need the support of other Christians going in the same direction to help build one another and be there for each other.

Many churches have small groups or interest groups that you can join. This is a great way to connect with other people in the church. What better way to connect with other Christians than watching Monday Night Football together with the guys or making scrapbooks with the ladies!

The Bible tells us “Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another” (Hebrews 10:25). In other words, the Bible instructs us to get together at a local church to fellowship, learn and grow with each other.

This is not a journey that needs to be done alone. If you try to go at it alone, you will give up. There are going to be ups and downs in your daily life. So you need other Christians to encourage you and help you get through tough situations that you will encounter.

I can’t tell you how many times I have encountered something and needed the help of my church friends to get me through.

For many years I had two accountability parters who I met at church. The three of us would get together and talk about our weeks, what we felt God had been showing us and what was going on in our personal lives. We would encourage each other. We would pray for each other. We would bounce ideas off of each other. We would push other. We’d cause each other to get out of our comfort zones and maximize our potential.  I grew so much during those times because of the encouragement of my two accountability partners. It was a great time in my life and it all came about because I had found friends in my local church to do life with.

What you will find is that the more you grow in your relationship with God, you are going to want to hang around other people who are growing in the same direction.

By getting plugged in at a church, you will meet new people, and those people will become your lifeline. They’ll help hold you accountable, so you don’t drift back into a sinful lifestyle. They will become the ones who you do life with. And it will become a huge aspect of your Christian walk.

So get around the type of people that you want to become. My dad has told me for years, “Show me your friends and the books you read, and I will show you who you will be in twenty years.”

Find friends from church who will encourage you and push you to new levels in your spiritual walk with God and learn to become all that God has called you to be.
Next Step #5 – Share with Others

After you have accepted Jesus to be the Lord of your life, it is time to start telling your friends, family, and other people about Jesus. The goal of the Christian life is not to just get to heaven. The goal is to live a life of growth and purpose. We are to represent Christ in all we do. In Matthew 4:19 Jesus said, “Follow me, and I will make you a fisher of men.” If we are following Jesus, then we need to tell people about Jesus.

If you are a new Believer, there is a good chance you maybe telling yourself; “I cannot tell someone about accepting Jesus. I do not even understand it all.” That is okay. You can however, ask someone to come to church with you. There will be someone (a pastor, music leader, small group leader) at your church who can help your friend or family member make the same great decision you did. In fact, you could even get them a copy of this book, which will take them though the steps to become a follower of Jesus Christ. Together, you both can make a difference.

I assure you, once you have been a part of helping someone else come to know Christ, you will not want to give up. You are playing a vital role in that person having the chance to go to Heaven.

It is okay to become bold in your new-found faith. In fact, I encourage you to be bold. Tell people about what Jesus did and is doing in you. You will be able to inspire others to make the same great decision you did and to live for eternity in heaven. There is no greater reward than knowing you played a part in saving someone’s life by bringing them to a place where they give their life to Jesus Christ.

Bible passages about sharing your faith:

Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free-gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

John 1:12, “But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, he gave the right to become children of God.”

John 6:47, “Whoever believes in me has eternal life.”

Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. 6 In all ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Acts 16:31, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.”
